1. Preamble

Water management is a crucial component in our sustainability, encompassing various aspects such as water supply, water use, and wastewater discharge. We are committed to implementing responsible practices that ensure the efficient and sustainable use of water resources throughout our operations as far as practicable. Our policy aims to minimise water consumption, optimising our processes to reduce water waste, implementing effective wastewater treatment measures, protecting aquatic ecosystem and biodiversity, and promoting awareness among the University’s community. Through our water management strategy, we strive to preserve this precious resource, mitigate water-related risks, and contribute to the overall conservation and sustainability of our ecosystem.

2. Policy Statement

The University commits to implementing water management measures through:

Compliance Obligations

  • Comply with all applicable local legislations and regulations, and whenever possible, adopt the guidelines or best practices to maintain quality water supply and prevent water pollution.

Quality Water Supply

  • Regularly test and monitor the quality of water supply to ensure it is safe for consumption and complies with all regulatory requirements.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain all water sources and supply infrastructure with adequate and proper cleaning to prevent contamination and ensure the quality of the water supply.

Water Conservation & Re-use

  • Ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply, and minimising water consumption by adopting water-saving technologies.
  • Regularly conduct maintenance and monitoring of the water supply infrastructure to promptly identify and address any leaks or inefficiencies.
  • Incorporate the use of recycled or reclaimed water for non-potable purposes to reduce water wastage.

Wastewater Discharge

  • Ensure all wastewater generated on the campus complies with regulatory standards before discharge.
  • Implement appropriate treatment and sampling process where applicable, to prevent the pollution to the municipal water system.
  • Prohibit the discharge of wastewater, any spillage and accidental release of hazardous and/or contaminated materials to marine ecosystems.
  • Implement response protocols and provide training for spillage of chemical and hazardous materials to prevent and respond to potential water pollution incidents effectively.

Water Consumption Tracking

  • Record the water consumption to facilitate monitoring and review of water consumption performance and usage pattern on campus.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Promote awareness of water saving, water re-use and pollution prevention through communication, engagement, and education.

3. Applicability

This policy is applicable to all service providers and supply chains for the campus. It is expected that both the service providers and supply chains will adopt the same principles and incorporate them into their operations accordingly.

The policy will be reviewed from time to time as appropriate and, in any event, once every three years. The policy will be made available and known to all these stakeholders and the public.
