1. The University aspires to foster a culture where sustainability and environmental responsibility permeates our daily learning, teaching and research endeavors. In order to reach our goal of carbon neutrality, it is crucial that we integrate our academic and communal efforts, share our knowledge and wisdom to promote sustainable learning, and practice good corporate citizenship. Our ambition is to lead the way among higher educational institutions in creating a more environmentally-friendly and resourceefficient future.
2. In line with the Government’s policy to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050, Hong Kong Baptist University continues to share our vision to support sustainable development and recognises the urgent need to address climate change and its impact on the global community. As part of the community, we commit to taking action to reduce our carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality.
3. The University commits to achieving carbon neutrality for Scopes 1 & 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2044. As a roadmap to achieve this target, we aim to reduce the concerned GHG emissions by 50% by 2035/36, compared to 2012/13 level. We also encourage all relevant stakeholders, including but not limited to the service providers and the suppliers, to share the same vision on sustainability as the University by taking positive actions to reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions.
4. To this end and taking reference from the Government’s Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050, the University has developed four strategies as the core of its plan to achieve carbon neutrality:
(i) Energy saving and green buildings
(ii) Green transport
(iii) Waste reduction
(iv) HKBU community engagement
5. Apart from the existing measures in place to reduce carbon emissions (including energy-efficient fixtures and installations, adoption of renewable energy on campus and green buildings, etc.), the University shall continue to refine its roadmap with actions for target achievement (as and when appropriate) by exploring further opportunities to evolve and elevate the sustainability measures, especially by leveraging on technological advancements.
6. To ensure that we are making strides towards carbon neutrality, the University continues to conduct an annual assessment and measurement of its GHG emissions to gauge its environmental impact and identify areas for improvement (if any). The respective progress and/or results will also continue to be reported to the University Administration regularly for monitoring purposes.
7. The achievement of carbon neutrality is a collective effort that requires the participation of the entire University community. Members of the University are encouraged to actively contribute to reducing the carbon footprint by adopting sustainable practices and promoting environmental awareness within their respective communities. Through collaboration, innovation and dedication, we believe together we can achieve a more sustainable and carbon-neutral future for all.
